Janis Joplin-Mercedes Benz |
|
The last song that this musical genius ever recorded was entitled, "Mercedes Benz." The acappella song was recorded early October 1970.
Oh lord, wont you buy me a mercedes benz ?
My friends all drive porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So lord, wont you buy me a mercedes benz ?
Because Joplin died 3 days later, she was unable to record it with instruments, however the song was co-written with poet Michael McClure. Ultimately, the song showcased social issues within society where people associate happiness with material items. The song has since been used for Mercedes commercials in the '90s. While she never owned a Mercedes, Joplin was known for her hippie painted Porsche.
Her last live performance was 2 months before her death in Cambridge, Mass. at Harvard Stadium.
